Our hidden treasure
If you’ve never visited the wine cellar at Elmhirst’s Resort, it is a must see when you visit.
Hidden away underground in front of the main building sits our wine cellar. Go through the locked gate, down the stairs, pass through a heavy wooden door and you’ll feel as though you are stepping into another world. Warm lighting and a long harvest table greet you as you scan the room and see that the walls are lined with the finest Ontario and Canadian vintages that you can find.
The original 1951 building that once housed the Elmhirst store and office was torn down in 1999 and it left behind a hole formed by the foundation that had been hand built by Arthur Elmhirst. It also left a question; what do we do with this hole in the ground? As it turned out, it was the right depth below ground to provide ideal conditions for a wine cellar. An idea was born, and the old foundation was covered up and then lovingly restored and transformed into the wine cellar that you can visit today.
An underlying philosophy in everything we do at Elmhirst’s is to be sustainable and hyper local; we grow and raise much of what we consume on the property and we support local providers to round out our offerings. The same philosophy applies to our wine selections; we choose the best wines from across the province including wines from Niagara, Prince Edward County and the North Shore of Lake Erie. You’ll also find some from other areas of Canada including the Okanagan region.
Peter and Greg Elmhirst are both very knowledgeable about wine and they enjoy sharing this knowledge with guests. We encourage you to visit the wine cellar for a tutored wine tasting at a cost of $15 per person. Guests will learn to differentiate the grape varieties, try a vertical tasting and learn how to describe the nose of the wine. Private tastings may be booked for groups of 4 to 12, before or after your dinner in the Hearthside Room. All wines are served in crystal stemware. Call our front desk to book.
The wine cellar also provides a special backdrop for special occasions like wedding celebrations, anniversaries or romantic getaways.
